There have been many animals and plants going extinct over the centuries, with more becoming threatened each year. We should care and actively work to stop this from happening because it is largely our fault and they are part of God’s creation too. So, what is currently being done and what can you do to help?
According to the National Wildlife Federation, Congress enacted the Endangered Species Act in 1973. This gave responsibility to the federal government to protect threatened to endangered species, as well as critical habitats that are vital to their survival. “As of October 2009, 1,361 plants and animals in the United States were listed as threatened or endangered. There are many additional species that are currently being evaluated for possible protection under the ESA, and they are called ‘candidate’ species” (NWF). This is a good start, but more can be done.
Some large organizations, like the one mentioned above and others, have been working to help in this fight; you can read what the National Wildlife Federation and the World Wildlife Fund do by clicking the corresponding links. These are just two examples. They try to find the leading causes and then target them; climate change, the spread of invasive species, loss of habitat, and so on are some of the problems we have to face if we are to make a difference. A simple thing you can do is donate and spread the word through conversation and social media. The news doesn’t talk about it enough, so we have to get it out there.
The Endangered Species Coalition lists ten things you can do to help – you can read the great article by clicking here. The first step is to learn about the endangered species in your area, which I will do for my next blog post. There are many encompassing tips, such as disinfecting any bird baths we have to ensure that diseases are not being transmitted, which is not something we really think about doing. It is easy to search for other ways to help by searching on Google for information and advice – there’s actually a lot you can do!
But don’t let this overwhelm you – just do one step at a time and keep track of your progress. By doing this, you can see all that you’ve accomplished in just a short period of time. You can do this!
That is all for now, but I’ll post once a week. Thank you for reading! I hope this was effective in calling out to you. One thing we can all do right now is pray. Have a great day and see you again soon!
